SAFESTAR: Sexual Assault, Forensic Examinations, Support, Training, and Resources

SAFESTAR is a unique model of care that draws upon the strength and resilience of Indigenous women to put an end to sexual violence, while also providing care for women and teen victims. Specially selected and qualified Native women learn the skills necessary to deliver emergency first aid to sexual assault survivors, provide referrals for follow-up care (medical or other), educate communities on the harm caused by sexual violence, and collect sexual assault forensic evidence (“rape kits”) to promote accountability for the perpetrators

 

Amber Alert in Indian Country: Child Protection Training in Tribal Communities

Amber Alert in Indian Country assists Tribal communities in developing programs to safely recover endangered missing or abducted children. Access online, recorded, and in-person training and TA opportunities on their website.

 

Tribal Child Victims and Witnesses Support Materials

Developed by the Center for Court Innovation with funding from the Office for Victims of Crime, these materials were created specifically for children and youth in Tribal communities with a goal of providing effective, trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate information and support to children in a way that they can more easily understand, so they can feel informed, supported, and empowered.

 
 

Indigenous Coloring Book

This coloring book consists of images created by Indigenous artists and compiled by staff at the White Earth Nation’s CAC for use by the children in their service population. The artists and White Earth Nation CAC have made the book available to other CACs that would like to provide culturally responsive materials for Native children and families in their waiting rooms.

 
 

Restoring the Sacred Circle: A Toolkit for American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes

Developed by the National Center for Youth with Problematic Sexual Behavior in partnership with the Indian Country Child Trauma Center and OJJDP, this toolkit provides guidance for Tribal communities and programs as they work to understand and respond to youth with problematic sexual behavior.

 
 

A web-based resource mapping tool funded by the Office for Victims of Crime and developed by the National Center for Victims of Crime, National Congress of American Indians, Tribal Law and Policy Institute, and StrongHearts Native Helpline. The tool provides a listing of all services available for AI/AN survivors of crime and abuse and identifies gaps in victim services so those can be addressed.

 
 

Indigenous Sexual Assault and Abuse Clearinghouse (ISAAC)

ISAAC, a partnership between the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN), the Alaska Native Women's Resource Center (AKNWRC), and Alaska Network on Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault (ANDVSA), is a national clearinghouse that provides training and technical assistance on issues relating to sexual assault of American Indian and Alaska Native people. ISAAC offers TTA to medical providers, victim advocates, community, and criminal justice responders working with Indigenous peoples within Tribal communities or communities that serve Tribal populations.

Developed by the Tribal Law and Policy Institute, the Tribal Court Clearinghouse is one of the most comprehensive available collections of resources related to tribal justice system issues, including resources related to child abuse and neglect.

This informational bulletin, by Randall Cooper of the National District Attorneys Association’s National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse, provides an overview of the development of CACs and MDTs in tribal communities.

 
 

National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center Advocacy Curriculum

This curriculum supports tribal programs in their efforts to provide advocacy and safety for survivors within their communities and to end violence by embracing Indigenous culture. It is appropriate for new advocates and for team building, in-services, public education, and cross-training initiatives.

The goal of the Mobile Healthcare Association - Native American National Coalition of Mobile Health Clinics is to build a nationwide network of like minded individuals working toward improvement of health and increased access to health care for Native American communities.
